Community Center of Little Tibet

Community Society/Cultural Context/Research Based Design

DESIGN INTENT

The community center is a public place for the local community to gather for group activities, to share information from each other, to serve special events for surrounding, and to provide better life quality to people. South Parkdale is a west downtown community of Toronto. As an immigration country, there is half residence from a different world. Except for English, Tibetan is the first foreign language. Therefore, this area also named Little Tibet. Buddhism as the significant belief of Tibetan, I decided to use one of the auspicious symbol, Endless Knot, as my concept. In Buddhism, the Endless knot means lucky diagram. It presents continued development which is matching to the current urban design theory, Sustainable Community. I designed one building to contain all the functions because the community center is a hub to connect people from the same area. The interior of the community center, there are three features to present endless concept, continued lighting - two lightwells allow natural light come through from top to all way down, continued corridors - endless inside circulations on each floor and continued staircases – endless vertical circulation.
